Values:

The University Policy Office Manager shall hold these values with respect to the work assigned to us, the manner in which we interact with others, and the relationships we build in the course of performing our duties:

  • Be accountable. UPO will strive to learn from mistakes, respond promptly and honestly to complaints and criticism, take responsibility for tasks/projects that rightly belong to us, report fully to supervisors, and show results for the investment made in our programs.
  • Be civilly and socially responsible: UPO will strive to maintain the moral, ethical and social justice aims of University policy and to advance these values over expediency when the two conflict.
  • Practice customer satisfaction: UPO will listen to the people and the institution that we serve, assure that we maintain a high level of service, and follow through to assure that outcomes, not just efforts, are measured and reported.
  • Promote freedom of expression: UPO will place a high value on assisting University departments to formulate and implement policies that promote academic freedom, freedom of speech and of the press, freedom to peaceably assemble, freedom to be diverse and to thrive in our community, and freedom of association. UPO will not hesitate to ask hard questions when policies are proposed that may have the effect of impairing these freedoms.
  • Promote inclusiveness and diversity: UPO will be an effective tool for the diversity efforts of the University by facilitating and promoting policies that actualize diversity goals.
  • Enable and support academic and research innovation: UPO will contribute by crafting compliance solutions that support, not stifle, the academic and research activities of our students, faculty and staff, and that seek to minimize risk without undermining the benefits of such activities.
  • Act with integrity and mutual respect: UPO and those representing this office will act all times with the utmost respect for the law, as well as for the dignity of all persons with whom we interact.
  • Promote opportunity and access: UPO will be an important resource for the entire University community to have a participatory role in policy development and compliance.
  • Above all, be diligent. “Leave nothing for tomorrow which can be done today. Never let your correspondence fall behind. Whatever piece of business you have in hand, before stopping, do all the labor pertaining to it which can then be done.”—A. Lincoln, Notes on the Practice of Law, 1850
